Safety First

Whether you are commercial cleaning or cleaning your own home, there is always the potential to sustain an injury if you do not practice proper safety procedures.

Here are some tips and guidelines to follow when cleaning your house:


Before you begin cleaning, make sure the room or area you are working in is properly ventilated. Many cleaning chemicals can have dangerous fumes that can potentially cause irritation if inhaled. Ensure the area you are cleaning is well-ventilated; open windows and turn on fans to help circulate air flow.

Chemical Safety

Read all manufacture’s labels or Safety Data Sheets (SDS) before you begin cleaning. These labels will provide you with cleaning instructions and warnings associated with each product. Never mix chemicals together, mixing household cleaning chemicals can be hazardous. Always keep chemicals out of reach of children and pets.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Wear appropriate clothes when cleaning. If chemicals come into contact with exposed skin they can cause burns or rashes. To avoid this wear close-toed shoes, long pants, long sleeved shirts, rubber gloves, and protective eyewear (if necessary) while cleaning.

Slips and Falls

To avoid slips and falls when cleaning around the house use non-slip or gripping pads under rugs and runners. Also confirm that toys, furniture, and extension cords are cleared from the main walking paths of your home.

When cleaning windows, ceilings, light fixtures, or ceiling fans make certain that you are using the proper equipment. Use sturdy ladders or stepstools when cleaning in high places. Do not place ladders on uneven flooring and it is recommended that you always have a “spotter” to help stabilize the ladder. Never stand on folding or swivel chairs.

Cleaning safety should become a priority in your everyday cleaning routine. Implementing these guidelines will help to keep you and your family safe while cleaning your home.
