Party on the Porch

The BBQ season is approaching in full swing. That means it is time to start setting up your patios and getting your furniture out of the garage. Your patio furniture has most likely been in storage all winter long; so, it is also time to consider giving it a good clean. Here are some tips on how to easily and quickly clean several different types of patio furniture.

Plastic

To clean your plastic patio furniture simply spray with an all-purpose household cleaner and then wipe off any residual dirt or grim. An alternative method would be to use a warm soapy water solution. Wipe off your plastic furniture with the mixture and then rinse with clear water.

Metal

Metal patio furniture is a great option to have outside year-round, it is durable and low maintenance. To clean metal furniture, use a mixture of ¼ cup mild dish soap diluted into 1 gallon of water. Use a stiff bristled brush to scrub away any dirt or rust. To help fight against rust, use steel wool to buff away oxidation. You then might want to consider sealing rusted metal furniture, with paint or other rust prevention sealants, after you have cleaned, in order to protect against further oxidation build-up.

Wood/Wicker

Wood is a porous surface so it must be cleaned carefully. To protect from scratching or damaging softwoods, like wicker, clean in small sections using a soft bristled brush or sponge. Use a mild soap and warm water combination. It is important that you make sure to dry wooden furniture completely to avoid mildew growth.

Fabric

The key to cleaning your fabric covered patio furniture is to always check the manufacturer’s instructions first. This will give you the recommended cleaning procedures. When in doubt just use a mild warm soapy water solution, again, to hand wash off any dirt/debris. For the tough to remove stains, use any of your preferred fabric stain removing products. If you do choose to machine wash your fabric items always let them air dry. This will prevent hammocks and other patio furniture coverings from shrinking.

Hopefully, by using these tips your patio furniture will look like brand new; having you, your family, and guests out enjoying the sun in no time.
