Why is it recommended that you regularly clean your refrigerator? It is important because your refrigerator stores both raw and cooked foods, along with beverages and other condiments. It is vital to keep it hygienic to reduce risking potential food contamination and poisoning. Although it may not be as easy as it seems, using these tips will make cleaning your refrigerator a more manageable experience.

What to Use and What NOT to Use

Gentle kitchen cleaning products, such as surface wipes, are acceptable to use inside your refrigerator. However, to avoid using harsh chemicals nearby food, liquid dish soap, and warm water combination is the safest product. Never use bleach inside of the refrigerator. This chemical can be very dangerous if it comes into contact with food and ingested.

Cleaning Procedure

  • Remove all food from the refrigerator
  • Take out all the drawers and shelves so they may soak in the dish soap/warm water solution
  • Wipe all surfaces inside the fridge (do not forget the top and sides)
  • Use baking soda and water to remove any stubborn stains
  • Dry all pieces thoroughly before replacing

Ok, so you’ve successfully cleaned your refrigerator, now what? Yes, that’s right, you have guessed it; it is now time to tackle cleaning the freezer!


  • Turn off the freezer, either by turning it down or unplugging the unit. If you do unplug the entire unit do not worry about the food inside of the fridge, it should stay cool long enough
  • Remove all food and ice from the freezer
  • Take out all the drawers and shelves to soak in the same dish soap/warm water solution as the pieces from the refrigerator
  • Use an equal parts warm water and vinegar solution to clean the inside of the freezer
  • Dry all pieces thoroughly before replacing

Use these procedures when cleaning your refrigerator/freezer, and soon implementing the cleaning of these appliances into your housekeeping routine will be effortless.
